He knew the war was coming, and that what we now call 'self-sufficiency' would be vital.
As well as allowing him to return to the 'Golden Country' of his youth, and supplementing his meagre income as a writer, this was practical preparation for the horrors to come, which might have lasted indefinitely, for all Orwell knew.

Meanwhile:

In Britain... The HMS Blanche strikes a mine and is sunk off the Thames estuary. It is the first Royal Navy destroyer lost during the war.

In the Shetland Islands... German bombers drop bombs on British territory, for the first time, in a strike targeting naval vessels and flying boats. No significant damage is done. A rabbit is reported to have been killed.

I kept hearing this "BOING" sound during the night. The next morning, there were shallots scattered everywhere.

This is a crazy good year for fungi. I have never seen such a profusion or variety, and never such large ones, growing in every yard and field. It's kind of creepy, like an alien invasion, or a preparation for something sinister.

In just a paragraph, Orwell transports us to another land and another era. Magical.

George~~

How far "out in the fields" did you have to go in order to "notice" the horse and foal dung? Just curious.

Meanwhile, unsurprisingly, I am reminded of Wheat Field with Crows (1890).
