A little rain in the evening, otherwise dry, but overcast & not very warm. Many harebells. Found the first ripe dewberry. Oats almost ripe in some fields, wheat grains still milky. Seagulls about – one does not usually see them here. The Ridleys have a dahlia in bloom.

    “The Ridleys have a dahlia in bloom.” He makes it sound amazing, perhaps exotic.

  3. Although besieged by screeching swarms of crazed, disoriented seagulls swirling in the threatening, gray/black sky, Orwell hunkers down and writes of the “dahlia in bloom” trying to avoid the intimation of a dark, ominous aura enveloping the planet.
